Harvey Gates Sr. Named National Hemophilia Foundation Volunteer Of The Year
RALEIGH, N.C. – Harvey Gates Sr., president of the Hemophilia Foundation of Maryland (HFM), has been named the National Hemophilia Foundation’s Volunteer of the Year in honor of his many collaborative initiatives in 2011 between Hemophilia Treatment Centers (HTCs) and chapters in the Washington, D.C., area. Gates established chapter summits between HFM, the United Virginia chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation and the Hemophilia Association of the Capital Area to improve outcomes in the areas of patient programs and services, advocacy and patient education. His work with the Georgetown University HTC and Children’s Hospital HTC, both in D.C., and the Johns Hopkins University Hospital HTC in Maryland helped ensure that social workers will receive appropriate resources, including financial support, to facilitate the treatment of patients at these HTCs. Separately, Gates initiated a Memorandum of Agreement between HFM and the Johns Hopkins University Hospital HTC for HFM to provide annual financial support for hemophilia community members who receive treatment at the HTC, while the HTC agreed to provide additional nursing and physician treatment services for its Maryland hemophilia community members as well as increase its outreach services to encourage more patients to become involved in hemophilia chapters and national hemophilia organizations. He has implemented or initiated numerous innovative chapter programs and services which have been paramount to improving the quality of life for persons affected with bleeding disorders throughout Maryland as HFM president.
Gates has served as president of HFM for three years. He is a 22-year hemophilia community member who has two sons and four nephews who all have Hemophilia A.
