The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences Case Study

The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences is a cross-disciplinary nonprofit organization in Research Triangle Park that acts as a catalyst to facilitate technology development among North Carolina universities, while serving as a gateway to establish research collaborations with the bio/pharmaceutical industry and countries in Europe and Asia. The Hamner Institutes also has an Accelerator to support emerging companies and a new Institute for Translational Medicine to enhance its research in oncology, diabetes and respiratory diseases.

The Work We Did For Them:  We transitioned the company in its branding from CIIT (Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology) Centers for Health Research, in operation starting in 1974, to the broader mission of The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences.  Our firm assisted with organizing a gala event held June 7, 2007 launching the transition on its campus, featuring remarks by local and regional officials including N.C. Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue.  We provided content for the organization’s new Web site http://www.thehamner.org/.  The Hamner Institutes’ partnership with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to establish a joint Center for Drug Safety Sciences to test medicines for fatal flaws before they are marketed resulted in a major article (front page, Triangle and Co. section) by The News & Observer

The Results:  Our work provided national awareness for the organization, as it helped its researchers land multimillion-dollar grants as well as brought in new partners such as BioMedomics and b3bio, Inc. for The Hamner Accelerator for Translational Bioscience.  Press coverage has included The Wall Street Journal, WRAL-TV, Tech Journal South and Triangle Business Journal.  More than 100 media outlets internationally picked up the announcement of The Hamner Institutes’ partnership with UNC for a joint Center for Drug Safety Sciences.
