Unless you were thoroughly consumed with food and shopping this weekend, you probably heard about Tiger Woods crashing his car at his home in Orlando around 2:30 a.m. Friday, followed by allegations that prior to the accident he had fought with his wife about having an affair. In golf terms, bad PR like that is like hitting your ball into the lake.

Tiger Woods released a statement today on his Web site that apologizes for unnamed “transgressions,” the same day that Us Weekly reported that he has been having an affair with a 24-year-old Los Angeles cocktail waitress Jaimee Grubbs. This statement is vague and leaves much to the imagination, which, PR-wise, can be a big mistake.

To continue the trend of typically non-credible tabloid sources breaking headline news – you may recall TMZ confirming Michael Jackson’s death back in June – the gossip magazine US Weekly announced on its front page this morning that they have exclusive details about Tiger Woods’ 31-month affair with LA cocktail waitress Jaimee Grubbs, including documented proof in the form of 300 text messages and a voicemail left by Woods on Nov. 24.

America’s favorite sports hero, Tiger Woods, has become America’s fallen sports hero. Among PR professionals, it’s impossible to discuss the subject of personal branding these days without the philanderer’s name coming up in everyone’s mind. It often takes a personal crisis of some sort to stimulate real change and growth in a person’s life. Because a personal brand is something crafted, one can change it. Scrooge did it, right? So can Woods.
