PR: The Good, Bad and Ugly
“Octobabies” Turn One
by Michelle Fowler
Who can forget the PR frenzy that started this time last year when the world found out that Nadya Suleman had given birth to eight babies? The initial fascination over the mother who made history by giving birth to the world’s longest-living set of octuplets soon turned to mass criticism. The bad PR began when it came to light that she was a single, unemployed mother who had been supporting her first six children with the help of food stamps and Social Security disability payments.
Prolonging Her Fifteen Minutes Of Fame
Nadya is back in the spot light gracing the cover of Star Magazine’s February issue in – what else? – a bikini. She has lost 150 pounds in the past year, dropping from 270 pounds, when she was pregnant with the octuplets, down to 120.
How did she do it? She says she regularly hit the gym for three-hour sessions at midnight, after all the kids had gone to bed. That sounds fishy to me – you tell me what young mother of 14 (!) can keep her eyes open after midnight, especially for a three-hour workout session.
I can’t see how this PR stunt will win her positive points in the court of public opinion, but I have been wrong before. Do you think this is a positive play for the “OcotoMom”? Feel free to comment below.
