Social Media PR: Lessons Learned From Election Day

Candidates had to enter uncharted waters in their campaign strategy, and on Election Day in 2008, 1.8 million tweets were sent. Jump ahead four years to Election Day 2012, when there were 1.8 million tweets sent every six minutes, and social media has become a place where 39 percent of adults look to voice political opinions, find answers and learn about candidates. This atmosphere and volume of posts and tweets created a minefield for brands and companies trying to navigate through potentially dangerous conversations, so what did we learn yesterday that we can apply and take with us to other areas of our Social Media PR strategy?

Often times, PR folks get a bad rap for just throwing out blanket PR pitches and seeing what sticks, but that isn’t what PR is or should be. Our job is building relationships, getting to know people and making the lives of reporters easier, not frustrating them with arbitrary self-centered pitching. Even if your client is moving into 10 new markets, there are some basic things you need to always do. It may take a lot longer up front, but the results should be worth the effort.
