For the past several years, Apple has been able to get away with being the Mother Theresa of the tech world, particularly when it came to sexy smartphones, laptops and overpriced mp3 - I'm sorry - m4a players.

Ah, location-based apps. Face it – you’re addicted, I’m addicted. When traveling to various destinations in life, we want credit where credit is due.

In the words of Snoop Dogg, it ain’t. Public relations, like most industries, is constantly evolving due to factors such as the economy, advances in technology and new generations joining the work force.

Since I’m from a family of loud-mouthed Italian-Hispanic New Yorkers, food happens to be one of my favorite hobbies, so it’s a good thing the Triangle shares a similar outlook regarding this passion.

Let me just start off by saying, if you didn’t catch the 15th Annual Piedmont Farm Tour this past weekend, you should be ashamed of yourself. Just kidding! But I’m sure glad I made it out of bed before noon on Sunday to attend.

Call me old fashioned, but I still cringe when at the mercy of Twitter’s 140-character limit. As digital media becomes a more prevalent, permanent channel of communication and I am forced 2 use numbers, symbols & abbrevs. in place of actual words and phrases, I am plagued with the same question – are we losing our ability to write?

Thanks to Tweets, news sites and bloggers such as our own Bobby McDonald, we have all been made aware of the ongoing PR social media disaster by Nestle. On the flip side of the coin, famed ice cream connoisseurs Ben & Jerry, who have a reputation for sweetness in and outside of the pint container, exhibited outstanding PR through their “Free Cone Day” campaign.

The fact that celebrities hire lucrative PR reps is no breaking development, but what I think is the most telling when it comes to celebs being PR-savvy is how they act on award nights, especially the Oscars.
I like to look at awards season as a PR final exam. Everything celebrities have been paying a team of highly-trained people to do is put to the test, and the public gets to evaluate how much they have – or have not – learned about basic PR.

It would seem as though the highlight of the 2010 games is the fight for the right not to know. As the word-of-mouth frenzy took off about the 2010 Olympic Games, the public saw the usual army that is the 24-hour news cycle doing everything to prepare for breaking news updates on every little detail, short of busting out a time machine and traveling into the future.

Google yourself. Go ahead, do it. No one will think you are vain – in fact, you are crazy if you don’t do it on a regular basis.

All of the different ways in which social media creeps into the corners of our lives continue to fascinate me. Remember when you had to tune in to Saturday Night Live or late night television to get in a few laughs over current events or “Richmeister” the copier room guy? With humor being a universal language – kind of like math – it is no surprise that social media sometimes aims for the funny bone.

In case you missed it, MMI senior writer Wesley Hyatt was featured in an interview for the popular local news network WRAL's recurring segment, the "Tar Heel Traveler."
